The KSDA offers many levels of classes for learning swing dancing in Knoxville.  We host a weekly swing dance at the Laurel Theater (1538 Laurel Ave Knoxville, TN, 37916)  on Wednesdays from 7pm to 10:30pm.  Doors open at 6:45.  Admission is $3 ($2 for local students and KSDA cardholders) and includes admission to our drop in lessons.  Admission for the longer series lesson plus the dance is $5. If you have any feedback (criticism, comments, something you loved something you hated) about a class, or have any suggestions for new classes, please let us know!

Beginner Level Drop In:  7:30 – 8:15 pm
This introductory lesson is aimed towards new dancers who want to get comfortable with the basics of swing dancing and out on the floor social dancing their first night.  Class meets on the main floor of the Laurel and is included with dance admission.  No partner any dance experience needed.  Classes will rotate between two weeks each of 6 count and 8 rhythms (Swing/Lindy Hop is really a 2 count dance, but putting them together in 6 or 8 count patterns is an easy way to get out on the floor quickly).

Intermediate Level Drop In:  7:00 – 7:30 pm
This drop is for dancers who are comfortable with the basic movements of swing dancing and are ready to get some more focused learning.  After you’ve taken 4 beginner drop ins is a good time to consider attending these lessons.  Class meets on the main floor of the Laurel and is included with dance admission.  Monthly Schedule:  1st & 2nd Wed – Lindy Hop, 3rd Wed – Charleston, 4th & 5th Wed – Office Hours.  No admittance to this class after 7:05.
After class, students are invited to take the beginner drop in class and work on their fundamentals, socialize outside, or quietly observe the beginner drop in.

Progressive Series:  7:00 – 8:15 pm
Series topics will rotate and last for one month each.  These classes are typically for dancers who are comfortable with the basics and looking to improving their dancing by f ocusing on one topic (or multiple closely related topics) for a month-long series.  Often these classes will have progressive content.  Occasionally series will be beginner friendly, and any prerequisites will be announced on the front page of the website and during dance announcements. Classes meet on the basement floor of the Laurel and is $5 for both general admission and KSDA benefit cardholders, and includes the price of the dance.  Cardholders and students may purchase an entire series at the beginner of the month and receive one week free.  Admittance to this class after 7:20 will be at the discretion of the instructors.

Private Lessons
Many of our instructors also offer private dance lessons.  If you want to put more into your dance than just our weekly group lessons, you may want to get a private lesson with one of our KSDA instructors.  If you’ve never taken a private before, they usually last an hour and are between one instructor and one student.  They also can sometimes include a pair of instructors, a pair of students, or both.  Prices listed are per hour and may vary if it is a couple taking the lessons instead of an individual.  To schedule a private lesson, approach the teacher at a Wednesday dance, ask the door worker, or send an email to [SwingDanceKnoxville at gmail dot com].  If you don’t know who would be best to take a private from, pick the dancer you want to dance like or talk to any of our teachers about what you’d like to work on and they’ll point you in the right direction.
