We host a weekly swing dance at the Laurel Theater (1538 Laurel Ave Knoxville, TN, 37916) on Wednesdays from 7pm to 10:30pm. Doors open at 6:45. Admission is $3 ($2 for local students and KSDA cardholders) and includes admission to our drop in lessons. Admission for the longer series lesson plus the dance is $5. If you have any feedback (criticism, comments, something you loved something you hated) about a class, or have any suggestions for new classes, please let us know!
Level 0/Beginner Level Drop In: 7:30 – 8:15 pm
This introductory lesson is aimed towards new dancers who want to get comfortable with the basics of swing dancing and out on the floor social dancing their first night. Drop in classes meet on the main floor of the Laurel and are included with dance admission. No partner or dance experience needed! You might want to check out our Code of Conduct or Frequently Asked Questions. After you’ve been taking these classes for about a month and are feeling comfortable social dancing, consider joining the Level 1 Series classes!
Level 1 Progressive Series: 7:00 – 8:15 pm
Each month the KSDA offers a different topic for a month long series. Once you’ve gotten comfortable spending an evening swing dancing, join the next level to focus on one topic for a month-long series. Prerequisites (if any) will be announced on the front page of the website and during dance announcements. The classes meet on the basement floor of the Laurel, are $5 a night and include admission to the dance. Cardholders and local students may purchase 4 weeks at once for only $15 (1 week free). Admittance to this class after 7:20 will be at the discretion of the instructors.
Level 2 Drop In: 7:00 – 7:30 pm
A dedicated time for experienced dancers to hone in on more intricate technique or movements. This class is for dancers who have been swing dancing for awhile and are looking to push themselves. Drop in classes meet on the main floor of the Laurel and are included with dance admission. No admittance to this class after 7:05. After class, students are invited to take the beginner drop in class and work on their fundamentals, socialize outside, or quietly observe the beginner drop in.
If you have any feedback (criticism, comments, something you loved something you hated) about a class, please let us know!
Many of our instructors also offer private dance lessons. If you want to put more into your dance than just our weekly group lessons, you may want to get a private lesson with one of our KSDA instructors. If you’ve never taken a private before, they usually last an hour and are between one instructor and one student. They also can sometimes include a pair of instructors, a pair of students, or both. Prices listed are per hour and may vary if it is a couple taking the lessons instead of an individual. To schedule a private lesson, approach the teacher at a Wednesday dance, ask the door worker, or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you don’t know who would be best to take a private from, pick the dancer you want to dance like or talk to any of our teachers about what you’d like to work on and they’ll point you in the right direction.
